As the two grow from reluctant acquaintances to fast friends, a flurry of activity from the surrounding cast of characters slowly drives the plot forward, culminating in a revolt against Ryzek’s power. Along the way, she gains a new sense of self-awareness, and learns some hard lessons that challenge the conservative values she was raised with. A smart sci-fi tale with a feminist twist, Salvage is recommended for Gr 9 Up, particularly for fans of Wither and other girl power-themed stories.

Nyxia (#1) by Scott Reintgen

Thanks to the Babel Corporation, Detroit-born Emmett Atwater is given the chance to win both cash and a mining job on the new planet, Eden, where he will be digging for a valuable substance called Nyxia. With his mother sick and unable to afford treatment, Emmett jumps at the chance to help his family out. The trouble is, there are far more strings attached to this opportunity than he first realized. When Babel starts asking him to make some questionable choices, he must decide if he is willing to risk his integrity for a chance to win big. Recommended for Gr 8 Up for some violence.
