What to Read After Harry Potter (Printable List)

Cast, P.C. & Kristin. Marked (House of Night #1). 2007.
Gr 9 Up. After Oklahoma teenager Zoey Redbird turns into a vampyre, she flees her ultra-religious family for her city’s House of Night, an exclusive boarding school and refuge for newly turned vampyres. There, she quickly gains new abilities, friends, enemies, and frenemies. Elements of intrigue, world building, touching character relationships, and Zoey’s increasingly ridiculous love triangles make this series a soapy, addictive treat for older teens.

Clare, Cassandra. City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments #1). 2007.
Gr 8 Up. “Suddenly able to see demons and the Darkhunters who are dedicated to returning them to their own dimension, 15 year old Clary Fray is drawn into this bizzare world when her mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a monster.” (Publisher’s summary)

Messenger, Shannon. Keeper of the Lost Cities (#1). 2012.
Gr 6 Up. Twelve-year-old Sophie Foster has always known she was different. She can hear other people’s thoughts, after all. Then she learns that she’s actually an elf, and is whisked away to the secret city of Eternalia to begin her training. As in her human life, she far outstrips her classmates in the elf world—except the reason for that just might be more dangerous than anyone expects.

Riordan, Rick. The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson #1). 2005.
Gr 6 Up. After finding out that he’s actually a demigod, Percy’s mom sends him to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for the children of other gods.

Rowell, Rainbow. Carry On (Simon Snow #1). 2015.
Gr 9 Up. Simon Snow, an 8th year student at Britain’s Watford School of Magicks, is the most powerful magician of his generation, and the one prophesied to defeat the Insidious Humdrum. His latest year at school isn’t going so well. His headmaster and mentor, the Mage, is acting all mysterious and his love life on the skids. What’s worse, though, is his conniving roommate, Baz, has mysteriously disappeared. Baz is probably a vampire, and most definitely evil—but what if something has happened? What if Baz is in life-threatening peril? A lovely LGBTQ+ fantasy/romance that will make Harry Potter fans swoon.

Scott, Michael. The Alchemyst (Nicholas Flamel #1).
Gr 7 Up. “Nicholas Flamel was born in Paris on 28 September 1330. Nearly seven hundred years later, he is acknowledged as the greatest Alchemyst of his day. It is said that he discovered the secret of eternal life. The records show that he died in 1418. But his tomb is empty and Nicholas Flamel lives. The secret of eternal life is hidden within the book he protects—the Book of Abraham the Mage. It’s the most powerful book that has ever existed. In the wrong hands, it will destroy the world. And that’s exactly what Dr. John Dee plans to do when he steals it. Humankind won’t know what’s happening until it’s too late. And if the prophecy is right, Sophie and Josh Newman are the only ones with the power to save the world as we know it. Sometimes legends are true. And Sophie and Josh Newman are about to find themselves in the middle of the greatest legend of all time.” (Publisher’s summary)
